  • Title: Turning the tide of Suicide
Descriptive info: 3Ts (Turn the Tide of Suicide) is a registered charity (reg no.. CHY15710), founded to raise awareness of the problem of suicide in Ireland and to raise funds to help lower suicide rates through dedicated research, educational support and intervention.. In February 2007, 3Ts became a founder member of the Action on Suicide Alliance, a group which has since grown to 13 organisations who came together to lobby for increased funding and implementation of suicide prevention strategies.. The No.. 1 killer of young men in Ireland is not cancer, nor is it road traffic deaths, it is Suicide.. Over 700 people in Ireland are estimated to die through suicide annually, 1 in 6 suicide deaths are males under 25 years, or almost 1 in 4 males under 35 years.. In 2009, the number of deaths by suicide rose dramatically by almost 25%, yet Government funding of organisations to cope with prevention, intervention and the aftermath decreased by approximately 20% in the last two years.. The 3Ts receives no Government funding but relies on private corporate donations and fundraising initiatives.. Where does somebody in suicidal crisis turn to?.. The state provides no dedicated service for people in suicidal crisis.. This vacuum in life-saving services was filled in October 2009 by The 3Ts in partnership with fellow charity, Console when the two charities set up.. 1Life Suicide Helpline (Tel: 1-800-24-7-100).. , Ireland s only dedicated 24 hour suicide intervention helpline, a freephone number providing professional counselling services by phone, text, face to face and cyber counselling.. 1Life is available for anyone who has any issue relating to suicide, whether an individual in a crisis situation or someone seeking advice for another.. A large portion of 3Ts fundraising is spent on funding the 1Life Suicide Helpline.. The more awareness we have as a community about problem of suicide the more opportunities we create to lobby for change.. Since its launch in 2003, 3Ts has been involved in a variety of successful awareness projects which we believe have contributed to bringing the problem to the public consciousness.. The 3Ts has also raised funds in support of many other charities working in the area of suicide prevention, intervention and postvention.. 3Ts Supported Projects Past Present include:.. :.. RESEARCH EDUCATION:.. All Ireland Suicide Survey.. DUMP Project Disposal of Unwanted Medicines Properly.. Seasons for Growth: Schools Colleges Suicide prevention programme.. Space Programme: Temple Street Childrens Hospital.. Support for parents/carers of young people who engage in deliberate self harm.. SUPPORT INTERVENTION.. POLITICAL LOBBYING.. 3Ts lobbies the government to properly fund and implement national suicide prevention strategies.. Prof Kevin Malone presentation to Oireachtas:.. FUNDRAISING:.. SPAR Charity of The Year 2009, 2010 2011.. Be sure to drop into your local SPAR store to make a donation.. Look for signs highlighting that a donation of 1 cent will be made with each purchase of this product to "The 3ts - Turn the Tide of Suicide".. 3Ts are privileged to be 2009 2010 SPAR "Charity of the Year" and are benefiting hugely from the resulting increased awareness.. Last year, leading Convenience Retail Group SPAR raised over 180,000 for the Irish Hospice Foundation and it looks like a similar result has been achieved in 2009 for 3Ts thanks to the support of SPAR SPAR Express customers retailers countrywide.. Throughout 2009 SPAR have raised awareness and much needed funds for 3Ts through a number of programmes including collection boxes at store checkouts, fundraising initiatives by SPAR staff.. and the sale of a number of dedicated products.. In the hugely popular TV3 series, The Apprentice, Team Platinum won an Apprentice challenge set by SPAR to create a Christmas themed product to be sold in 470 SPAR stores nationwide, with all proceeds going to SPAR Charity of the Year, the 3Ts.. The team developed the "Luv Bear", to encourage people around Ireland to communicate their feelings for one another and demonstrate their love by way of giving the gift of a "Luv Bear" and at the same time support 3Ts.. The "Luv Bear" was available in all SPAR and SPAR Express stores nationwide for 2.. 99.. It is a not-for-profit project for SPAR and their suppliers.. All proceeds go to the 1Life Suicide Prevention Helpline, a joint venture initiative launched by The 3Ts and Console in October 09.. "LUV Bear" is a best seller but if there are any left in your local SPAR pick up a Bear to support this very worthy cause.. Suzanne Weldon, SPAR Marketing Communications Director commented: We are really proud to be supporting the 3ts - turn the tide of suicide as a community based retailer, raising awareness of the tragedy of suicide in Ireland, and even more so to be actually doing something tangible to raise much needed funds for this worthy cause.. Over 2010 SPAR and their staff will be working closely with the 3Ts in promoting 3Ts and the 1Life Suicide Helpline in communities countrywide.. Look out for dedicated products and fundraising initiatives in your local SPAR.. Connor McKeon The Legends of Swing performed in The National Concert with a fantastic Big Band show in aid of The 3Ts.. The line up both years was a superb 24 piece orchestra including an amazing 14 piece string section led by the wonderful Alan Smale plus special guests performing on the night.. Performing the big, bold and fantastic sounds of Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Bobby Darin, Louis Armstrong and their  ...   of deaths through overdose and accidental poisoning.. Collection points for unwanted or unused medicines will be located at pharmacies.. This potentially has very real benefits in terms of suicide prevention, child accident prevention, environmental protection as well as collecting valuable information on prescription and over-prescription patterns.. DUMP aims to:.. Reduce access to means of overdose;.. Reduce Accidental poisoning of children;.. Help Prevent the unused medicines entering into the environment.. 10,000 Para suicide cases attended at A E departments in Ireland in 2001, with medication overdose the method of choice for the majority of both men (64.. 3%) and women (83.. 1%).. Accidental poisoning in young children accounts for at least 3,000 attendances at A E with 10% of accidental deaths in childhood due to poisoning, placing it second only to road traffic accidents.. Over half of childhood poisoning queries to the National Poisons Information Centre related to poisoning with medication.. The disposal of unused medicines presents an additional problem.. There is a widespread public belief that the correct method of disposal is to flush unwanted medicines into the waste stream but this brings with it huge environmental implications and this project will fund the correct disposal of such medicines.. All data will be examined in the light of national poisoning and suicide / para suicide statistics.. In particular, the possibility of a correlation between the drugs employed in suicide / para suicide and the drugs that are unused / hoarded will be examined.. The project will also endeavour to analyse correlation between medications prescribed and unused, trends in prescription practice and the cost of unwanted medicines to the Dept of Health.. A pilot project has been held in the South Western Area Health Board and in Phase 2 5 collections from 162 Pharmacies 5 collections to date yielded 7.. 26 tonnes of unwanted medicines.. A similar scheme was launched in the Midlands region in early 2006.. 3Ts believe that this project should be available countrywide.. back to top.. SUPPORT - 3Ts.. Part of our mission at 3Ts is that our fundraising regularly contributes to other voluntary organisations working in the area of Suicide Research, Intervention, Prevention or Support.. Recent initiatives which have benefited from 3Ts funding include:.. 1Life Suicide Helpline.. Collin Project (Northern Ireland).. Console: Centres in Clondalkin and Finglas and Seasons for Growth Programme for Schools Colleges.. IASP International Conference Killarney August 07.. Living Life Counselling.. Living Links.. Each shirt weighs 21 grams, symbolising the aftermath of suicide, the reverence of life and living, the life lost, and the void left behind.. Seamus displayed this thought-provoking piece of Art in collaboration with 3Ts at a recent Conference in Dublin Castle entitled Joyce, Psychoanalysis and Psychiatry and again at a very prestigious 3Ts fundraising event in Dublin Castle in April 08.. McGuinness speaks candidly about 21 Grams subject matter, Suicide, emphasising the human loss and tragedy it visits on those left behind and the fact that it affects the living and the dead.. He also highlights the randomness of Suicide, the fact that suicide affects people from all walks of life.. Seamus McGuinness was born in Donegal and now resides in Co Clare.. He is a lecturer in Textiles at GMIT, Galway.. His work has been exhibited at a number of solo and collaborative exhibitions and he has also created a number of public and corporate commissions.. This is the key issue, communication: talking, listening and assisting.. Research indicates that around 80% of people who take their own lives have mentioned it to a confidante in the month leading up to their death and in some cases have asked that person not to say anything.. The confidante is left with a huge burden of guilt if the individual proceeds to take their own life.. We all need to look out for our friends and seek help with our friend if we believe this person is in crisis..
