Descriptive info: Possible ban on all HFC s in Air Conditioning by 2020.. By.. jeff.. |.. Published:.. November 10, 2012.. According to.. RSL Ireland.. , there is some big news coming from Brussels regarding the banning of HFCs.. There is also a possible total ban on all HFC’s by 2020.. Critically there may be a ban on factory pre-charged air-conditioning and refrigeration equipment which is essential for small installers such as ourselves.. While we understand the reasoning, it could cause major issues.. It is expected that truck refrigeration equipment to come under the F-Gas regulations.. Further all natural refrigerants to come under F-Gas regulations.. promise to keep us posted.. Posted in.. News.. |.. Tagged.. air conditioning.. ,.. Global Warming.. GWP.. HCFCs;R410a;R22;HFC; Mitsubishi Electric.. HFC.. Leave a comment.. Refrigeration, Air Conditioning, Ireland and Global Warming.. October 22, 2012.. As we continue our series on the effects of refrigeration on the environment, it is wise to give an overview of Global Warming or Greenhouse effect.. The Sun’s rays travel through space (which is a vacuum) more or less uninterrupted (except for hitting a few other particles).. They have energy in the form of heat and light.. These rays are known as radiation.. The Sun is just one big mass of heat, billions of times stronger than a Nuclear weapon.. The radiation particles that leave the sun spread out so that their density decreases the further travelled.. If this was not the case then the Radiation would be so intense it would be the same as being beside the Sun.. The radiation first reaches the earths’ atmosphere which is denser than space.. The atmosphere absorbs some of the radiation.. In fact the Ozone plays a critical part in filtering out this.. The heat which does reach the earth has an energy of circa 140W per meter squared at the equator.. This heats up the surface creating our winds.. However some of the surface heat is radiated back up to space but they have lost energy.. There has been an effective balance between what has been radiated out in to space versus what has come in to our planet for millions of years, ever since enough Ozone was created from the plant life within the sea.. Over the past two hundred years, human beings have been producing greenhouse gases, notably Carbon Dioxide or CO2 from the burning of fossil fuels.. These gases have a “greenhouse effect” in that they prevent the surface rays from radiating back into space as the atmosphere becomes more dense due to the presence of these gases.. The net effect is that the atmosphere heats up.. There are many greenhouse gases, some of which are naturally occurring such as water, carbon dioxide and methane.. We have also added other man-made greenhouse gases, such as nitrous oxides (NOx) and fluorocarbons (FCs) and Hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs).. Green House Effect.. Ozone.. Why R22 units need replacing in Ireland’s Air Conditioning systems.. September 18, 2012.. R22 is an Ozone Depleting Substance (ODS) according to the.. EPA.. R22 units are those air conditioning systems which use the refrigerant R22 to pump the heat from inside a building to outside and vice versa.. Ozone-Depleting Substances (ODS) are chemicals that can damage the earth’s ozone layer if they escape into the upper atmosphere.. ODS include hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs), which are still in use as refrigerants.. The only ODS still widely in use are HCFC refrigerants, especially R22 and blends such as R408A.. The use of virgin HCFCs in maintenance and servicing of refrigeration and air-conditioning equipment is banned since the end of 2009.. Recycled and reclaimed HCFCs can continue to be used until the end of 2014.. Therefore, the deadline to change an R22 system is end of 2014.. It is up to every contractor now to notify their customers of the impending danger to their systems.. There is replace technology available with.. Mitsubishi Electric.. as discussed previously.. This has the advantage of using the existing pipe work.. The problem with R22 being phased out is that if the equipment develops a leak then it is impossible to replace the refrigerant.. An option that can exist is to use a drop in replacement which is a refrigerant that has been blended to act similar to R22 in terms of performance.. However it will not be as efficient and it needs to be tested in each application first.. Therefore the preferred option is to change out the unit in favour of a non ODS refrigerant such as R410a.. ODS.. R22.. 2 Comments.. Air Conditioning and the F Gas Regulations in Ireland.. September 3, 2012.. The.. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).. is responsible for  ...   area of office or room space up to 20m².. Generally that office may have up to 4 people with PCs and a small printer/photocopier.. For a domestic application the unit is suitable for all rooms less than 20m² (Except Bathrooms).. Offer Valid for Dublin, Kildare, Meath, Louth and Wicklow only.. bedroom.. canteen.. cooling.. energy efficient.. heating.. office.. sitting room.. Invertor Technology in Air Conditioning.. July 6, 2012.. I keep being asked why an Inverter Air Conditioning Unit is better than a standard fixed speed compressor type unit.. The answer is that a compressor varies its speed to match the cooling or heating load and therefore consumes only the power necessary to match the exact requirement of the room.. In other words the compressor acts like the heart of the system.. If you were to go running then your heart would speed up.. This is great for burning the pounds.. However imagine every time you walked your heart pumped at the running rate? A little scary as you might think you were having a heart attack.. The point is you would burn high energy doing little work.. When an inverter driven air conditioning unit is operating at partial load (walking) the energy efficiency of the system is significantly higher than at full load.. In a typical application (in an office for example), partial load conditions prevail 90% of the time.. In other words once the office is nice and cool or warm the systems runs at a smaller load just to keep the room at that temperature.. A fixed speed system can only run at 100%.. Therefore for a fixed speed system, once the room needs additional heating or cooling, the system runs at 100%.. The net effect of this is that it over heats or over cools depending on what cycle the system is on.. To refer to our example above, it would be like running to the January Sale then standing in a queue.. This equates to using a lot of energy in the first instance such as trying to heat a cold room, then slowing down and moving ever so slightly in the queue which is the same as when the room is hot.. However if every time the queue moved you ran, you would overtake a few people only to find out that you have to return to the same spot in the queue anyway.. Here in.. we use only invertor driven systems!.. Air.. compressor.. Conditioning.. Inverter.. Servicing helps prevent heating failures.. October 22, 2010.. During a maintenance visit to one of our clients this week, our engineer discovered that the circulating pump bearings, essential for the heating system, were failing.. We were able to replace the pump ensuring a fully functioning heating system as winter approaches.. This is why it is essential to carry out most of our heating maintenance at this time of year.. If our client had not instructed Aherne Air Conditioning to carry out the maintenance, then it is highly likely that the pump would have failed at some stage over the winter.. It may have failed on a Sunday evening in late December probably Christmas resulting in a call out fee and, as no suppliers are open on a Sunday, the client would have to endure a cold night before having it fixed on the Monday.. I know this is a worst case scenario but hey as the saying goes, prevention is better than cure and, in a lot of cases it is usually cheaper.. Indeed last January was one of the busiest periods faced by AAC with numerous call outs to both pumps and boilers.. pump service.. pumps..
