The Cross Gallery is delighted to announce its first solo exhibition of new work by Irish artist David King.. Using photos collected from around the world via the internet as his starting point King presents us with two series of works, depicting both birdhouses and dwellings respectively.. Muted in tone, gothic in style and mostly set at night, these iconic images do not try to give a specific sense of time and place but rather, a painted space, somewhere in-between.. Preferring to keep a certain distance from  ...   engage with the grand tradition of landscape realism but are also reminiscent of Rothko’s large colour fields.. Full of visual and textural contrasts, areas of layered translucent paint that seep and bleed into one another are then knitted together with fragments of figuration.. This creates a tension between the content of painting and its abstract possibilities and is reflective of David Kings views that painting is a multi faceted experience framed within tradition, technique and the subjectivity of the spectator.. David King studied at the National College of Art and Design graduating with a M.. A in Fine Art in 1997.. In 2002 he was awarded the Hennessy Craig Scholarship from the R.. H.. A.. He has exhibited extensively through out Ireland and his work can be found in many public and private collections including AIB, Bank of Ireland, OPW and AXA..
