Bryan Keane a former international runner and cyclist was the first Irish triathlete to win 1st, 2nd and 3rd places in ITU Cup Racing, and did so in 2009 in the space of five weeks.. Bryanwas involved in a serious accident back in September 2010 while out training.. Despite this major set back Keane is back racing and back to winning ways taking first place in the annual Hell of the West Triathlon.. Bryan McCrystal a former professional footballer turned triathlete based in Dundalk who turned pro last year has had a great run of podium finishes up and down the country this season.. He was 9th Pro home in Ironman Lanzarote in May of this year his first outing at the distance.. There will be a great battle in the sea and on land from many athletes from all over Ireland for the National Title and we are looking forward to a great weekend of racing festivities in the West” said Eileen Sweeney Aquathon Festival Race Director.. Bryan was the first Irish triathlete to win 1st, 2nd and 3rd places in ITU Cup Racing, and did so in 2009 in the space of five weeks.. He was hit by a car resulting in a fractured patella or knee cap.. This resulted in six weeks in a cast and months without running or cycling.. After Keane’s unfortunate accident it was a race against time to recover and return to top level action in order to qualify for the 2012 Olympic Games.. However despite improving results, the impact of a quick return to running created the risk of sustaining long-term injury due to a muscle imbalance between his legs.. Because of this Bryan and his team have decided that it is more important to put his long-term career and health ahead of qualification for London 2012.. He made a quick transition from soccer player to triathlete and hasn t looked back since.. Winning the national series in only his second year and also qualifying for the world championships in Clearwater Florida, McCrystal has had success at all distances.. This year however McCrystal made a bold move and took out a professional race license.. Results in Estonia111 in 2011 where he finished 2nd to the famous Thomas Helreigel convinced him he could cut it with the best.. Only in May past, McCrystal finished 9th pro at Ironman Lanzarote and claimed 2nd fastest bike split, a remarkable achievement in his first attempt at the distance.. Two hands and two toes were all that it took to count the number of members, (twelve for those of you with all digits intact), when Galway Triathlon Club (GTC) was founded in 2000.. A small, close knit group of athletes came together to start the club and to promote the sport of triathlon in Galway.. Unlike now, when there are several races every weekend, back in the noughties, few races were available.. Thus part of the remit for clubs was to each host a race that other clubs could travel to and compete in.. In 2002 the club hosted its first Galway Triathlon sponsored by Daewoo and the Salthill Hotel in Salthill.. The event was won by local athlete Donal Mahon.. Following the success of the event, the club again staged the triathlon incorporating a swim, cycle and run in 2003, with almost 200 participants competing on the day.. The rising status of the triathlon was underlined when one of the countrys top tri-athletes, Trevor Woods, claimed the overall accolade.. One reason for the surge in popularity of the sport has been the inclusion of triathlon in the Olympics, while another has been that the sport promotes an overall healthy lifestyle.. 2004 and 2005 saw triathlon flourish in Ireland and ever increasing numbers in the Galway Club.. In 2004, the club hosted the event in the new venue of Dangan Sports Ground with the aid of Spirit One, Radisson SAS and NUI Galway with over 300 athletes in attendance.. The race was so successful, Triathlon Ireland, the Irish governing body of the sport, awarded Galway Triathlon the Irish National Championships for 2005.. It proved to be the largest triathlon ever to be hosted in the country, with 650 competitors from all over Ireland competing.. With road traffic an increasing concern, 2006 saw GTC move its annual National Series Triathlon event from Dangan to the wilds of Connemara in Carna and Kilkieran.. The spectacular scenery and a challenging course left athletes breathless from 2006 to 2010!.. And now in 2011 GTC are bringing their race back to the heart of the city and to where it all started, back to Salthill.. The club is following it s own advice, race to your strengths and are looking forward to providing a fun, challenging race.. The Galway Aquathon will focus on the best of Galway with a swim in the Bay followed by a run by the sea.. Join..
