Descriptive info: Programme.. 10 16 June 2012, Trinity College Dublin and University College Dublin.. Host Committee:.. Anne Fogarty (UCD).. Sam Slote (TCD).. Academic Committee:.. Marian Eide (Texas A M University).. Acknowledgements:.. UCD Strategic Fund.. UCD School of English, Drama, and Film.. TCD School of English.. Long Room Hub, TCD.. Campus Bookshop, UCD.. International James Joyce Foundation Scholarships:.. Maria Kager (Fritz Senn Award).. Sara Bryant.. Katherine Ebury.. James Fraser.. Hsin-yu Hung.. Camilla Mount.. IJJF Selection Committee: R.. Brandon Kershner (Chair), Valerie B?n?jam, and Dirk Van Hulle.. brings us back to.. JOYCE, DUBLIN and ENVIRONS.. The first Joyce Symposium took place in Dublin in 1967.. It was always designed to have some form of longevity.. Nonetheless, the first gathering spearheaded by Fritz Senn, Thomas Staley, and Bernard Benstock and a local team of Irish organizers and academics must have seemed like a leap of faith.. However, not surprisingly, the idea of a biennial conference took on and Dublin has exercised a gravitational pull ever since.. After the inaugural event in 1967, six further symposia have taken place in dear, dirty Dublin: in 1969, 1973, 1977, 1982, 1992, and 2004.. The return to Dublin by the symposium has often been tied to significant Joycean milestones: the centenary of his birth in 1982 and the centenary of Bloomsday in 2004.. This year heralds a more complicated coming of age as Joyce?s works published during his lifetime came out of copyright in the E.. U.. this January.. The changed legal scenario grants readers of Joyce a new freedom, one that this symposium sets out to celebrate and also explore.. Like all new-found freedom, the phenomenon of a public domain Joyce is one we will have to learn how to navigate in future years.. The two universities co-hosting the 2012 symposium have always played a pivotal role in Joycean academic gatherings held in Dublin.. Maurice Harmon in UCD and David Norris in TCD have acted as chief enablers of the programme on several occasions.. Together with local organizing committees and an international team of co-ordinators they ensured that Joyce symposia would be closely bound up with collaborations between the leading Dublin universities.. Sam Slote from the Department of English at TCD and I (as Head of the School of English, Drama and Film, UCD) were happy to be able to carry forward this tradition inaugurated by our predecessors and co-host the XXIII James Joyce Symposium in June 2012 at Trinity College Dublin ?in the heart of the Hibernian metropolis? and for the first time in Belfield, the modern UCD campus, a short bus ride southward from the city centre.. Joyce?s works are of course inseparable from Dublin; they inscribe and overwrite the city?s streetscapes.. Readers of.. Dubliners.. ,.. A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man.. Ulysses,.. and.. Finnegans Wake.. become intimately acquainted with the fictional city.. In coming to Dublin in 2012, you can re-trace not just Joyce?s Dublin but also take stock of Dublin?s Joyce.. It is true to say that the contemporary city now embraces and makes its own of a writer that it long held at arm?s length.. This April,.. was the book chosen for the One City, One Book Festival and was celebrated in over a hundred events which attracted large audiences of all ages and backgrounds.. Coming to Dublin is always a kind of homecoming, a return to Ithaca, for Joyceans, even if this is your first visit to the city.. I trust that you will have many opportunities in the next days to sit down with your fellow Joyceans and to debate given the changes and opportunities that 2012 have ushered in for Joycean scholarship where we go from here..
