  • Title: Lámha Suas » About
Descriptive info: WHO.. are we?.. Lámha Suas is an Irish based organisation dedicated to supporting education in Uganda.. Lámha Suas is run by Deborah Sheeran, a primary school teacher in Dublin who has attended the Understanding Development course in Kimmage and has a post grad cert in Development Education from DCU.. Deborah spent 5 summers volunteering with A-Z Children s Charity and was their Volunteer Teacher Co-Ordinator and their Development Education Co-Ordinator for 4 years.. Through observation and talking to Ugandan teachers she became aware of some issues which, if addressed, could help children, especially girls, to stay in school.. To that end Lámha Suas was set up.. WHERE.. do we work?.. In Madudu, in the district of Mubende, in Uganda.. WHAT.. do we do?.. We help Ugandan children, especially girls, to stay in school.. We help unqualified teachers to get their teaching qualifications.. We strive to educate Irish primary school teachers, pupils and medics on the realities of living in a developing country.. HOW.. do we do that?.. We help the children stay in school through our School Feeding Programme and our Building Programme.. We help the unqualified teachers through our Teacher Scholarship Programme.. We educate Irish primary school teachers and medics through our Volunteer Programme and primary school pupils through our School Twinning Programme.. Full details of all these programmes are available on our.. Programmes Page.. WHY.. do we want to do this?.. Keeping children,  ...   subsequent learning.. It also gives parents a strong reason to continue sending their children, especially their daughters, to school.. Helping Teachers To Qualify.. Quality education depends on quality teachers.. Badly trained, underpaid and poorly motivated teachers are unlikely to teach effectively.. There is overwhelming evidence that teachers matter.. The skill of a teacher is not solely defined by the knowledge they impart but also the emotional support and care they are able to provide for their students.. Teachers are the shapers of the future generation.. Educating Irish Teachers, Pupils and Medics.. We are used to seeing heartbreaking images of Africa in the media.. Although there.. are.. children dying of starvation and curable diseases, this is not the full story.. There are many African people who work hard to improve their communities; there are many people who make the most of what they have despite their unfortunate circumstances.. Only showing images of poverty and disease does these people a disservice.. That said, some of the hardest challenges people face relate to everyday life – fetching water for instance.. Lámha Suas offers volunteers the opportunity to live and work in Madudu; becoming part of the local community, eating local food, seeing the realities of life there for themselves.. We want Irish people to feel solidarity with those in Uganda not pity.. Educate a Man and you Educate an Individual, Educate a Woman and you Educate the Nation..

They learn how their lives are similar and how they are different.. Even at 10, most children already have preconce.. ived ideas about people in other countries this applies equally to the children in Uganda as to those in Ireland.. Writing to each other about their everyday lives, their loves and hates, their hopes and dreams, their countries and their cultures, gives them an understanding of each other.. We want them to grow up with feelings of solidarity with one another..
