Macroom Hospital began life as Macroom Workhouse in 1843, to provide for the destitute of the surrounding district.. It was intended for 650 occupants and half of the places were filled in its first year.. Two years later, when the Famine was at its worst, it could no longer accommodate all those who sought help.. During the second half of the 19th Century and up to 1921, the 'Union' continued it’s far from benevolent care of the old, the sick, the impoverished and the homeless.. It  ...   of the early records were also destroyed in the fire.. Only a small section of the original building still remains, however Macroom Hospital was rebuilt in the 1930's.. Today Macroom Community Hospital bears no resemblance to the House of former times.. Macroom Community Hospital continues to provide support to the elderly persons of Macroom and neighbouring parishes.. It is part of the PCCC pillar of the HSE South..     Descriptive info: Respite Care:.. The patients who avail of this service come to the hospital through the public health nurses referral.. The intention of respite care is to provide the family/carer of the individual with support by relieving them of their role for a period of time which is usually for two weeks.. The Matron, with the Assistant Director of Public Health organise to accommodate these patients.. Patients are usually admitted on Friday morning and discharged on a Thursday.. The ethos of respite care is to provide the family/carer with a break.. Convalescent.. Care:.. Patients coming from the acute hospitals, who require convalescent for a period of time, usually two weeks, use these beds..  ...   avail of these beds when the demand for the acute hospital is not there.. Matron will liaise with the public health nurses, G.. P’s and the continuing care placement co-ordinator as to who needs support in this area.. Matron will accommodate the patients identified as far as possible.. Palliative.. A request for a bed for terminally ill patient/palliative care patient may come from G.. P.. , continuing care placement co-ordinator, Marymount Hospice or the acute hospital.. This patient is taken into the hospital following a decision by the Matron and the continuing care placement co-ordinator.. Continuing.. Aim to provide care to the patient who is no longer able to live at home..

WHAT IS THE HOSPITAL LIKE AND WHERE WILL I STAY?.. Relatives and patients are invited to visit the hospital prior to admission.. This can be arranged by contacting Matron.. A day in the Hospital.. Meals are seved at approximately the following times:.. Breakfast.. 8 AM.. Mid-Morning Drink.. 10:30 AM.. Lunch.. 1 PM.. Afternoon Tea.. 2:00 PM.. Teas.. 4:45 PM.. Light Refreshments.. 8:00 PM.. The Catering staff strive to ensure all meals are as tasty and varied as possible, while considering the nutritional and individual needs of all patients.. Individual preference and dietary requirements are also catered for.. A Day Room with conservatory front is central to daily activities in the hospital.. The room is pleasant and bright for patients to sit in during the day.. Meals are served in the Day Room to patients who are able to avail of same.. See the room and more images.. here.. Some activities which take place in the Day Room each day.. Sunday am.. Holy Commuinion is distributed by Eucharistic Ministers.. Monday am.. Prayer Group recite Rosary and prayers.. Tuesday am.. Sarcrament of the sick is available on request..  ...   SHOULD I BRING WITH ME INTO HOSPITAL?.. Personal Belongings.. You are free to bring personal belongings within reason, but it is advisable that it should not be too extensive.. A complete list of property which you bring will be made on your arrival.. The following are desirable:.. Suitable day clothes including a pair of comfortable shoes.. Nightwear/Underwear.. Slippers.. Toilet requisites, including toothbrush, toothpaste, soap, hair brush, shaving gear etc.. All clothing should be clearly marked with your name.. Current GMS prescription.. Any specials Appointment Card (eg Clinic Appointments).. Valuables.. If you intend to bring valuables with you please contact the hospital on or prior to admission.. In exceptional circumstances, arrangements for the safe-keeping can be made through Matron.. The HSE does not accept responsibility for valuables or money unless they are deposited in the custody of the hospital.. GENERAL INFORMATION?.. Enquiries.. Relatives may telephone anytime, but it would be appreciated if they could ring during the day when administrative staff are on duty.. When patients are ill, it would be appreciated if one family member telephoned, who could then pass on the information to other family members.. Visiting.. It is our policy to encourage visiting, not only because of the pleasure it brings to patients, but also because it is often a very valuable aid to treatment.. Visiting times are flexible except during ward rounds and after 8:30PM.. We try to accommodate visitors whenever possible.. However, visiting is dependant on the patients condition and on the needs and privacy requirement of all patients..
