Twenty Ninth Sunday of Year 21st October 2012 - Mission Sunday.. Today is.. Mission Sunday: World Mission Sunday takes place on the second last Sunday of October each year.. October is the traditional month of universal mission since 1926.. World Mission Sunday provides Catholics with the opportunity to unite with their missionary sisters and brothers, and to recommit themselves to the Church's missionary activity, through prayer, sacrifice and financial contribution.. The theme for World Mission Sunday in Ireland this year is Growing in Communion.. On this special day, we celebrate the work our 1,700 missionaries and all missionaries throughout the world.. We appreciate that in these very difficult economic times there are many pressures on our personal finances and ask you  ...   Tullamore is seen here chatting with Fr Seamus O'Connor at the Presbytery.. Congratulations to Orla Morris, Charleville View and David Mannion, Durrow who were married in St Colman's Church Mucklagh on Sat.. 13th Oct.. Also to Colin Minnock, Clonshanny, who married Christina Hegarty, Ballinagore who were married in the Island Chruch on Sat.. I Asked God for Strength.. I.. asked God for strength that I might achieve.. I was made weak that I might learn humbly to obey.. I asked for health, that I might do greater things.. I was given infirmity that I might do better things.. I asked for riches that I might be happy.. I was given poverty that I might be wise.. I asked for power that I might have the praise of men.. I was given weakness that I might feel the need of God.. I asked for all things.. I got nothing I asked for, but everything I had hoped for.. Almost despite myself, my unspoken prayers were answered.. I am, among all people, mostly richly blessed.. October is the month of the Rosary.. and also the month of the Missions.. Mission Sunday takes place each year onsecond last Sunday of October, the traditional month of universal mission since 1926.. Diocese of Meath: Year of Faith.. The Year of Faith was launched by Pope Benedict at a Mass in St.. Peter s, Rome on Thursday October 11th, the 50th anniversary of the opening of the Vatican council.. (By Fr.. Pat Colgan, Belfast Fiji).. On Thursday 9.. th.. August, a group of about 250 (priests, lay missionaries, Companions in Mission and Rabi islanders) boarded the Lomaiviti Princess for the long journey to Rabi, the home and place of ordination of the newest Columban priest, Taaremon Matauea.. During the 20 hour voyage, we stopped at the ports of Savusavu and Taveuni (well known yachting destinations), finally berthing in the open sea off Rabi.. A succession of small fibre fishing vessels then arrived to ferry us to a beach where we would await transport to the Catholic Mission station.. It was very dark when we arrived at the halls, classrooms and churches where we were billeted and fed.. The sounds of kava being pounded, animals being slaughtered for the feast and people and trucks coming and going all night filled the night air; we could feel the enormous excitement and struggle of the people to give us their best.. Presentation Sisters Killina: Farewell Sr Marie Walsh and Welcome Sr Joan Bland:.. Sr.. Marie Walsh, the leader of the Community ended her term of office as leader on Friday 31.. st.. August.. Sr Joan, a native of Portlaoise comes to us from Galway.. Welcome to the parish Sr.. Joan and we wish you many happy years among us.. The next morning saw us all assembled under the iron roofing of the large shed erected for the ordination.. The Archbishop of Suva, with about 25 priests from Fiji, the US and Taiwan ordain Taaremon, dressed in his traditional costume which was only shed when he was clothed by his relatives in the soutane of priesthood.. It was extraordinary to see the cultural procession of Bible and gifts, as well as hear hymns sung in i-Kiribati, Fijian, Hindi and Spanish, a reflection of Taaremon s missionary journey to date.. After an enormous lunch, we had an afternoon of dancing performed by the children of the various Rabian schools.. Celebrations only came to an end when the diesel generator had to be turned off to preserve precious diesel at 1am.. By that time, many of us were already on our way back to the beach to await our trips to board the Princess, which had waited all day.. By 6am, all were accounted for, up went the drawbridge and within an hour we were having Sunday Mass at sea, thanking God for his protection and asking it to continue for the next 24 wave-washed, sleepy hours!!! Taaremon returns to Taiwan in February 2013 indeed, what a journey.. Local faces at the Tullamore Show 12th August 2012.. A time to meet & Chat.. This week Rahan Parish and the entire communty around the midlands.. lost someone special, one of our most prominent figures, a true gentleman and a legend.. For years he entertained the crowds at fleadhs, concerts and gigs with quick wit, stories, yarns, jokes, dancing and even a song on a rare occasion.. He was not only an intricate part of a Rahan gig - much more than that, often putting.. in far more hours behind the scenes - attending meetings - organising fundraisers - building stages but more importantly he was a friend to everyone and always had time to talk, show concern, advise and encourage.. Joe was the glue that kept everything going in both good times and bad.. He will be sorely missed by far more people than he would have realised.. Our huge loss, is heavens huge gain - so many stories and memories were exchanged over the last few days.. Deepest and most sincere sympathies to Ita, Karen and Elaine.. Joe Monahan's Death shocked us all.. But the people of the parish, Rahan Comhaltas, members of Scor, Shamrock's GAA Club and members of the Golf Clubs and other organisations united in a show of solidarity to ensure that Joe got a worthy send off.. Thousands from all over Ireland visited Ross Road, Screggan for Joe's wake.. The above organisations and clubs as well as the the Offaly Team of 1971/72 and the School Children of Mucklagh formed guards of honour as Joe's remains were carried to St.. Colman's Church Mucklagh for the Requiem Mass.. Again the crowds here were huge.. Thanks to everyone who helped out with the funeral arrangements and the liturgy.. A TRIBUTE TO JOE..
