  • Title: History of SAG
Descriptive info: The Founding of the Social Action Group.. Early in February 1975, Jerh O’Donoghue, a teacher in St.. Mary’s Secondary School, Rathmore, organised a classroom discussion on what kind of community and country his third year students wished to live in and what role they could play in achieving their ideal.. As a result of some lively exchanges and challenges Jerh issued an invitation to his students to join him in forming a new organisation that would provide both the structure and the opportunities for young people like themselves to make a difference.. And so in the Geography room of St.. Mary’s Secondary School in late February 1975, the organisation known as the Social Action Group was founded by Jerh and his students.. From the beginning there was big emphasis on action but behind that action there was a vision and philosophy.. A brief History.. In the early days the Social Action Group members gathered for meetings for planning sessions for the sowing of vegetables and for turf cutting.. A feature was the deep discussions on life – its meaning and purpose, sport, religion, politics among other things.. It was a kind of informal University.. The group went on to hold parties for the elderly and visit St.. Finan’s psychiatric Hospital in Killarney building up friendships and breaking down barriers.. Then every Christmas there was a Fast to raise funds for projects in The Third World.. In 1982  ...   seven sheltered houses for the older adults and a larger Day Centre in the basement of the houses.. Then in 2000, this Care programme got an enormous boost when the group decided to mark the Millennium by constructing twenty extra sheltered houses and a larger Day Centre.. This Millennium project was officially opened by President McAleese in July 2002.. The Care of the Older Adults’ programme now includes a Laundry service, twenty seven sheltered houses, a Day Care Centre and a meals-on-wheels service and has been a brilliant success benefiting many older people and their families.. The.. programme is grant aided by The Department of the Environment, FAS, The HSE, The IRD LEADER program, Ring of Kerry Cycle, among many generous sponsors and supporters in the community and beyond.. Teach Iosagain was modernised and extended in 1996 and houses all kinds of facilities for young people and people in the community.. It is supported by the above-mentioned organisations and POBAL, one of the chief sponsors.. The Centre was again extended in 2006 and is now one of the most modern and progressive Youth Centres in the Country.. The Social Action Group members also engage in a wide program of other activities including exchanges with youth groups abroad, the GAISCE award, hosting of parties for older adults, cultural activities, nature walks, video production, and discussions among other things.. It is a form of informal education at its best..

  • Title: MissionPhilosophy
Descriptive info: Mission Philosophy.. The Mission and Philosophy of the Social Action Group.. The mission statement of the Social Action Group is.. “To give and not to count the cost”.. Those who founded, moulded and shaped the Social Action Group were strongly influenced by the Christian ethos of service to others, by the Meitheal tradition where neighbours gathered to help neighbours and by ideals of social justice and equality.. Young people in the group are encouraged to make a genuine effort as a group to brighten up the lives  ...   and shared benefits.. They are asked to look at people and in so doing see an image of themselves with the same needs, same possibilities and same rights.. Members are given the opportunity to take part in grand ventures like the construction of sheltered houses for the elderly but are also asked never to underestimate the power and importance of a smile, a kind word, a listening ear, an honest compliment or the smallest act of kindness all of which have the power to turn a life around..
