Descriptive info: July 11th, 2012 by Weldons.. Lots of new items uploaded to the website today, including this lovely Cork spoon, made around 1770 by Carden Terry.. What is most unusual is that it has a Hibernia; most Cork pieces were not sent to Dublin for Assay, but were instead stamped Sterling (or similar) by the silversmith.. In this case, Terry did send the spoon to Dublin.. with the introduction of a new duty in 1809, all pieces produced in Ireland had to be assayed, so the use of Sterling died out.. Cork spoon.. To see more images of the spoon, click this link:.. Cork silver spoon.. , and to read more about Carden Terry, see.. Jane Williams (née Terry), his daughter.. A Cork Freedom box made by Terry.. Carden Terry and his maker s mark.. Posted in.. |.. No Comments.. July 2nd, 2012 by Weldons.. Another member of the famous Walker family, Matthew Walker had a very long career, and was an excellent silversmith.. In 1737 he was elected to the Common Council of the City of Dublin.. His work is scarce, but generally of very high quality.. His mark was a very distinctive MW intertwined.. (Although it is a slightly rubbed mark, the intertwining is clearly visible.. If I come across a clearer example I will replace this!).. The read about the rest of his family, follow these links:.. Thomas Walker.. Joseph Walker.. Samuel Walker.. Comments Off.. June 29th, 2012 by Weldons.. For as long as people have treasured gemstones, rubies have been associated with power and emotion.. Its colour gave rise to a belief that an inextinguishable flame burned in the stone, and that this flame could not be hidden and would shine through any material wrapped around the stone.. Rough ruby crystal.. Red is also the colour of desire, and rubies were thought to be able to remove evil thoughts, control amorous desires(!) and reconcile disputes.. Rubies are a gem called corundum, the same gemstone as sapphires.. The conditions under which corundum forms has a great effect on its colour and appearance.. Corundum is composed of aluminium and oxygen, and is naturally colourless.. Trace amounts of chromium cause it to turn red, and the more chromium, the redder it becomes.. This is why rubies vary greatly in saturation of colour.. Chromium also causes fluorescence, which can add to the intensity of the ruby.. The most valuable rubies are red or slightly purplish-red with vivid saturation ( Pigeon-blood ).. Typically, these form in marble deposits, which makes them very hard to mine.. The most important historic source of rubies was Mogok in Myanmar (Burma).. Mogok is about 90km north of Mandalay.. These rubies have a vibrant red bodycolour, and glow a beautiful red.. Today, the most important sources are Thailand, Myanmar, Cambodia, Sri Lanka and Vietnam.. There are also deposits in Africa, though many are not yet being mined.. Below is a superb Art Deco ruby and diamond ring, set with a 1.. 8 carat Burmese ruby in the centre.. Burmese ruby and diamond ring.. Rubies have a hardness of 9 on the Moh s hardness scale, making them second only to diamonds in terms of hardness.. Most rubies are heat treated to enhance their colour.. This is permanent, detectable, and nothing to worry about.. In fact, without heat-enhancing, there would be so few gem-grade rubies that they would be prohibitively expensive.. The heating brings out the colour, and enlivens the stone.. Below is a before and after picture of the same ruby crystal showing the effect of heat-enhancing.. Ruby crystal before and after heating.. Wonderful rubies are often sold privately, and so it can be hard to get a glimpse of the top end of the market.. However, at the auction of Elizabeth Taylor s jewellery in December 2011 a superb 8 carat pigeon-blood ruby and diamond cluster ring (below) sold for a whopping 4.. 2million dollars!.. Elizabeth Taylor s ruby ring.. To view some of our collection of coloured stones, follow thing link:.. http://www.. ie/jewellery-coloured-stones-c-38_40.. html.. Diamond Jewellery.. June 15th, 2012 by Weldons.. A previous blog post spoke about dish rings, see.. ie/wordpress/2010/08/irish-silver-dish-rings/.. Essentially, dish rings, sometimes called potato rings, are circular stands, made for the purpose of insulating highly varnished tables from hot bowls.. ).. The earliest example known is an English piece, dating from circa 1700, some thirty years before they crossed the Irish sea.. The styles of dish ring changed and evolved with the fashion at any given time; mid-18th century dish rings are often elaborately chased, and made in a heavy gauge of silver.. Late 18th century examples are neoclassical in design, with orderly, symmetrical decoration.. Chinoiserie  ...   female form was considered by many people to be shameful and decadent, which, combined with its price, helped fuel its popularity! The next two pieces below would have no doubt shocked the morals of the era!.. A common motif in Art Nouveau is a nude/semi-nude female, often with long flowing hair, being transformed into a winged creature, such as in the next two pictures below, where the lady is transforming into a butterfly.. (In the first image she also has a fish tail.. It also saw the birth of Enamelling as a superb art, with masters such as René Lalique producing pieces the like of which had never been seen before.. Below is a wonderful brooch, with enamelling in rich Autumnal colours, and the profile of a lady in the centre.. A magnificent example is pictured below, and illustrates the symbolism of the Art nouveau period: the brooch is called l hirondelle, the swallow.. The swallow is a bird which returns every summer, and so represents constancy and faithfulness.. The blue waves give an almost dream-like feel to the piece, and the strong asymmetry of the piece reflects the nature of the pearl at the bottom.. Overproduction and mass-popularisation of Art Nouveau style in the 1910s helped bring about its demise.. While the pieces above illustrate the most elaborate pieces of the era, there were many pieces produced which were less ornate, and more suited to everyday wear.. Firstly there is a diamond drop pendant.. This piece has lovely open design, small leaf design in the centre, and a large diamond suspended off the bottom.. It is made to be worn directly on the skin, and sits flat on the neck.. Art Nouveau diamond pendant.. And to round off the blog post, here are more amazing pieces, mostly by René Lalique.. Snakes were common on Art Nouveau, and these are beautifully rendered; you can almost feel the movement in them.. Note the sphynx, an echo of the finds of Egyptian tombs which were being explored at that time.. The kiss was a popular motif in Art Nouveau, and was depicted in paintings, sculpture and Jewellery.. The use of moonstone gives this a dreamy, ethereal feel.. This piece is a wonderful example; lots of natural colours, and the use of the natural shape of the pearl.. It is symmetrical, but not rigid.. May 21st, 2012 by Weldons.. Historically, silversmithing was almost exclusively a male profession.. One such famous case is Jane Williams (née Terry), daughter of Carden terry, one of the most famous Cork silversmiths of all time.. In 1791, she married John Williams.. John worked for Carden, and the two men forged a very successful business.. Jane learned the trade in their workshop.. As was the custom at the time, a woman working with her husband would not have her own maker s mark, but would simply work for him.. Jane was widowed in 1806, and continued working with her father until 1821.. Father and daughter used this mark:.. One example of their work is this superb set of fourteen dinner forks, made for the Beamish family.. They are beautifully balanced, and of the very highest quality.. Another silversmith working at the same time in Dublin, on Bolton Street, was Elizabeth Bainbridge, a watchmaker.. Her mark was EB in a plain silhouette.. There are other lady silversmiths, including Jane Daniel, who worked in the first half of the 18th century, and was a superb maker.. I will add her mark to this page next time we have a piece by her!.. EDIT: Below is a picture of Jane Daniel s mark:.. May 18th, 2012 by Weldons..
