  • Title: What is Tae Kwon Do? « Warrior Martial Arts - Tae Kwon Do, Kickboxing, Self Defence – Cork, Ireland
Descriptive info: Tae Kwon Do is a Korean martial art which emerged in the mid-twentieth century, and has subsequently become one of the most widely practiced martial arts in the world.. The art is characterised by powerful hand strikes and kicks, which are used for unarmed combat, or in organised sport competitions.. [1].. At Warrior Tae Kwon Do, our students train in a number of differen aspects of the martial art.. Here is just a brief introduction to some of the subjects that our schools cover:.. Fitness.. Self Defence.. Sporting Competition.. Traditional Artform.. Focus.. Our classes are ideal for anyone who wants to get fit or stay fit.. Whether you are out of shape or already quite fit, you will find huge benefits from training with Warrior Tae Kwon Do.. Our stretches, exercises and techniques can not only help you lose a few pounds, but can make you more flexible, more agile and better co-ordinated.. Our exercises and techniques can tone and strengthen your body, making you far less susceptible to injury when engaged in other activities, not just Tae Kwon Do.. Although we make our classes as fun and enjoyable as possible, Tae Kwon Do does have a serious side.. We aim to ensure that all of our students can be confident in the knowledge that, should the need arise, they will be capable of defending themselves.. Our syllabus covers a wide range of self defence techniques that are both practical and easy to learn.. For those of you interested in the sporting  ...   and national winners.. If competition isn t your thing, our you are just looking for a more rounded experience of the martial art than is offered by other schools, you have come to the right place.. While we are very proud of our competition winners, we believe that the traditional art of Tae Kwon Do is about much more than just winning prizes.. The techniques that we practice are designed to not only strengthen the body, but to also focus the mind.. Our patterns can be used to improve you fitness and agility, thus aiding your physical health, but they can also be seen as a form of moving meditation, whereby the student must concentrate and focus their thoughts on each and every movement.. Focus is something which we feel is a very important skill to develop.. Both in our adults and children s classes, we encourage our students to work at their own pace to achieve their goals.. We never rush students into promotions unprepared or throw you in at the deep end because we feel that when a student is focussed and determined to achieve a goal, they will do so and will be proud of their achievement.. This particular skill is one which we particularly like to nurture in our students as it is one that can benefit you far beyond the realm of Tae Kwon Do, whether it be school study, professional career, or other interests of yours.. Descriptive info: At Warrior Tae Kwon Do, we aim to provide our students with a well-rounded experience of the art of Tae Kwon Do.. We allow students to progress at a pace which suits them, while providing careful instruction and encouragement along the way.. We ensure that students of all ages and levels of ability feel welcome at our schools and we strive to help them as they work towards their goals.. We like to keep an open mind when it comes to developing new training methods.. As a result, we have a constantly evolving syllabus, which is frequently adapted to incorporate the latest developments and innovations in sports / fitness training and in self defence.. We regularly cross-train in a variety of martial arts, often attending and hosting seminars in various different styles.. We use these opportunities to improve our own system, ensuring that we can provide our students with some of the best, most effective and realistic self defence training available.. Through our unique syllabus, we have developed a system which we believe is second to none in terms of martial arts instruction.. We work with our students to improve not only their  ...   Degree Black Belts, including his son, Barry.. As time went by, Dan opened more clubs throughout the West Cork region, as well as re-opening the Clonakilty Tae Kwon Do club.. Eventually, due to the growing commitment Dan owed to his clubs and his desire bring the art of Tae Kwon Do to a wider audience, Dan resigned from his job to become a full-time instructor.. Having served a long apprenticeship as an assistant instructor in Dan s clubs, Barry launched his own club in Innishannon in 2005 and a second club in Ballinhassig in 2006.. The Warrior Tae Kwon Do Schools always encourage and support students in their efforts to further their knowledge and development within the martial art.. For those with a desire to teach others, the schools offer students the experience to train as instructors.. Part of this training includes a term of apprenticeship as an assistant instructor in one or a number of schools.. The Warrior Tae Kwon Do Schools currently have a large number of students of all ages part-taking in this programme, some of whom may go on in the near future to open schools of their own..

  • Title: Our Instructors « Warrior Martial Arts - Tae Kwon Do, Kickboxing, Self Defence – Cork, Ireland
Descriptive info: Mr.. Dan O Mahony.. V Degree.. Dan began his training in Tae Kwon Do under the instruction of Mr.. Brian Buckley at his club in Clonakilty in the mid-1990 s.. In his early thirties at the time, Dan took to Tae Kwon Do immediately; having previously trained for a number of years in Shotokan Karate, many of the basic techniques were already familiar to him due to the similarity of these arts.. In the year prior to his First Degree Black Belt exam, Dan began training in the advanced class at Mr.. Buckley s Skibbereen club, affording him the opportunity to train with more students of his grade.. Dan was awarded his First Degree by Great Southern Tae Kwon Do in 1999, having passed his exam under Master Norman Creedon, President of the Tae Kwon Do Federation of Ireland.. Grading under Master David Oliver, President of Tae Kwon Do International, Dan has since been awarded his Second, Third and Fourth Degree Black Belts.. He opened his first club in Rosscarbery, County Cork, shortly after receiving his First Degree and since then has gone on to open many more as well as re-opening the Clonakilty club which Mr.. Buckley had since closed down, forming the Warrior Tae Kwon Do Schools that we know today.. In 2011, Dan graded to Fifth Degree Black Belt under Master Clive Harrison.. Over the past fifteen years, Dan also held the posts of coach to the Tae Kwon Do International Irish team and Vice President of Tae Kwon Do International Ireland; he is now Chief Instructor and President of the Warrior Tae Kwon Do Association.. Barry O Mahony.. IV Degree.. Barry commenced his study of Tae Kwon Do at the Clonakilty club at the same time as his father, Dan.. He has competed in numerous national tournaments throughout the years, as well as a number of international events, including the 2000, 2001, 2004, 2011 and 2012 World Championships.. Barry was examined by Master David Oliver for his First, Second and Third Degree Black Belt grades and was awarded the Best Grading Award by Master Oliver at his Second Degree exam.. He opened his first club in 2005 in Innishannon, County Cork.. Barry passed his Fourth Degree Black Belt exam under Master Clive Harrison in 2011 and  ...   Claire has numerous competition titles to her name.. Claire began her apprenticeship as an Assistant Instructor in 2007, working with both Dan and Barry O Mahony in a number of their clubs.. Since then, she has developed an excellent ability to teach and communicate with the younger students, giving them the guidance and confidence they need to progress through the ranks of the martial arts.. As well as her talent for teaching junior students, Claire has a keen eye for details and is very thorough in her technical instruction of students of all ages.. Mrs.. Anne O Mahony.. Anne, having spent years listening to her husband Dan and son Barry talk constantly about martial arts, finally decided to begin training in Dan s club in Clonakilty.. Having trained for a number of years in Shotokan Karate in her late teens and twenties (where she met Dan) and being a keen sportswoman, regularly playing soccer and having a background in Gaelic football and rugby, Anne s focus and determination helped her to not only progress steadily through the ranks, but also, as a relative latecomer to Tae Kwon Do competition, to win a number of awards at both regional and international level.. Anne works as Assistant Instructor in a number of Dan s clubs and served as Head Coach to the Irish team at the ICKKF Allstyles World Championships in 2012.. Claire McCarthy.. Claire s career in Tae Kwon Do goes back as long as any other instructor in the Association; she began training at the same time as Dan O Mahony and her first cousin Barry in the Clonakilty and Skibbereen clubs.. Claire graded to First Degree Black Belt with Barry under Master Oliver and later passed her Second Degree, again under Master Oliver.. She worked as an assistant instructor with Dan in Rosscarbery from a young age.. Even as a child, Claire s technical precision was always noted by her instructors and this level of ability has made her a valuable asset to the teaching staff at Warrior Martial Arts.. After a number of years out of training due to other commitments such as college and work, Claire has returned to both studying and teaching Tae Kwon Do and is currently in training for her Third Degree Black Belt..
